Title: Effect of elastic compression stockings in patients
with varicose veins and healthy controls measured by strain gauge plethysmography
Authors: Hirai M, Iwata H, Hayakawa N
Year: 2002
Type of reference: Controlled clinical trial
Garment type: Elastic compression stockings
No. of subjects: 34 limbs (20 limbs with varicose veins, 14
normal limbs)
Summary of trial: Aim of trial was to compare effects of 4
different types of elastic compression stockings on oedema prevention in patients
with varicose veins.
An increase in foot volume after elevation of leg was evaluated by strain gauge
plethysmography and effects of 4 different compression stockings – 8,
14, 22 abd 30-40 mmHg – were compared.
All stockings significantly reduced foot volume increase compared with no stockings
patient group and normal group
Conclusion – elastic stockings, even with pressure as low as 8mmHg can:
- prevent oedema in patients with varicose veins, as well as in normal controls
NB - the 22mmHg and 30-40mmHg stockings were better at preventing foot oedema
in patients with varicose veins than those exerting less compression |
